South Africa U-23 midfielder Gift Motupa says lessons were learnt from the team's participation at the Rio Olympics.
Owen da Gama's men exited the event at the first hurdle following a 1-1 draw with Iraq in Sao Paulo on Wednesday night.
South Africa needed a victory at the Corinthians Arena to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition. However, they were outplayed and finished bottom of Group A, having previously held hosts Brazil to a goalless stalemate and lost 1-0 to Denmark.
Motupa, who netted his side's only goal at the tournament, insists they gave it their all at the global showpiece.
"All I can say is that both teams played very well, except for us we wanted it more than them so that we could win the game. But we gave it our all, that's all I can say," Motupa said.
Pressed for further comment, the Orlando Pirates midfielder added: "I think we did our best so far although we didn't qualify for the quarter-finals. But we did our best as a team and we learnt a lot in this kind of tournament. If you want to win this kind of tournament you have to work extra hard and work as a team at all times."
