New Bidvest Wits signing Xola Mlambo has bid an emotional farewell to Chippa United following his move to Gauteng.
The talented midfielder, who only joined the Chilli Boys halfway through last season from National First Division club Cape Town All Stars, has been pried away from Port Elizabeth as he put pen to paper with the Clever Boys last week.
And despite spending just six months at Chippa, the 25-year-old could not hide his emotions in bidding the club farewell.
“I am lost for words,” he told Chippa United’s website. “I don’t know where to start and what to say, I am just grateful to the club for welcoming me with open arms in January, and for everything they have done for me.
“I want to thank the fans not only for the love and welcome they gave me on my arrival, but for the manner in which they cheered us on the pitch.
“It rubbed off on us as players, and in my opinion they are up there with the best fans in South African football.
“The singing and their spirit lifted us and in return all we wanted to do as players was to give back to them.”
Mlambo, who contributed two goals and five assists in his 16 League matches for the club, then thanked both management and his fellow players for their impact on his time spent in the Eastern Cape.
“I am grateful for the opportunity and the confidence the chairman and the coach showed in me,” he said.
“They have laid a good foundation for the club and I have no doubt Chippa United will be challenging for trophies this coming season.
“Lastly I thank my former teammates, who were great from day one. The reaction from them regarding my departure was astonishing. My message to the lads is: ‘Believe’.
“I wish you all the best.”
