Double blow for SA Olympic side as Erick Mathoho and Lebogang Mothiba ruled out of must-win clash

Posted: 9 August 2016 Time: 23:01

South Africa have received a double blow ahead of their must-win Olympic Games Group A clash with Iraq on Wednesday after Erick Mathoho and Lebogang Mothiba were ruled out through injury and illness.

Mathoho has been sidelined by an ankle injury after he went down in the last 10 minutes of their 1-0 loss to Denmark on Sunday.

Mothiba was withdrawn because of a potential case of chicken pox.

Better news for coach Owen da Gama is that Abbubaker Mobara, who suffered a hamstring strain against Denmark, is available for selection.

South Africa must win to stand a chance of reaching the knockout stages. They will do so if Denmark and Brazil draw, or if the Danes are victorious in that tie.

If Brazil and South Africa both win then goal-difference will decide who finishes second in the pool.

The match kicks off at 03h00 South African time on Thursday.
