Financial problems strangle Nigeria’s Olympic preparations

Posted: 4 August 2016 Time: 10:19

Nigeria face a race against time to land in Brazil for their opening Olympic group stage clash against Japan after being stranded in America due to financial issues.

The team are in Atlanta, USA at their training base, yet had flights to Brazil cancelled on four separate occasions, with the plane too small being the last excuse.

Yet financial difficulties have marred their preparations, with reports suggesting John Obi Mikel had helped financially from his own pocket.

Latest reports say the team will now fly out on Thursday morning, and will reportedly only arrive in Brazil seven hours before their Olympic opener against japan on Thursday night.

Players in the camp are understandably not impressed.

“This is nonsense. What are we supposed to do now? Just sit in America when the Games are happening in Brazil? We don’t even know when we are leaving and I tell you if we don’t leave today, I will just pack my bags and return to my club,” said a player who asked not to be named.
