Mamelodi Sundowns defender Siyanda Zwane says his team want to emulate Orlando Pirates’ success in the CAF Champions League and win South Africa’s second star.
Sundowns secured their berth in the Champions League semi-final after beating Zamalek 1-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night, taking top spot in Group B in the process.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Zwane said after the game. “I am overwhelmed, and am just failing to put everything into words. It’s a great feeling.
"I really want to put that star on Sundowns’ jersey … personally as a player coming to this club, I have won everything, and this is one cup I really want to win.”
Orlando Pirates remain the only PSL team to have tasted success in Africa’s premier club competition, and Zwane believes that his team now has the chance to emulate the Bucs, who he feels have given his side the motivation needed on their African travels.
“For us as a team, we have always been dreaming that we can do it,” he said. “Pirates gave us the motivation: we said to ourselves, ‘If Pirates can do it, we can also do it’.
“We now have a chance to go all the way to the finals.”
Downs’ semi-final opponents are yet to be decided following Group A’s CAF Champions League results on Wednesday, with Wydad Casablanca and Zesco United set to fight it out for top spot.
