Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is thrilled at the opportunity to once again compete for Nigeria at the Olympic Games having been selected for the Beijing Games in 2008.
The 29-year-old will head to Rio where his side have been drawn in Group B alongside Sweden, Colombia and Japan.
“It is a massive honour to represent my country at the Olympics,” Akpeyi told his club's official website. “I am very excited and am looking forward to it."
Twenty years ago the Nigerian football team won Olympic gold in the United States and Akpeyi admits that since then there is always pressure on the team to emulate that feat.
“It is a massive challenge to win the Olympics and credit should go to the group that made it against all odds back in 1996," he said.
"We must not forget though that we are now a different group of players and a different generation all together. The circumstances are also different.
“We are however as determined [as the Class of 1996] to do well in the Olympics. We do not want to go to Brazil just to make up numbers. We are there to represent the country and compete. We know that millions of people in Nigeria and Africa will be backing us to do well."
