Menzi Masuku is adamant Kaizer Chiefs duo Itumeleng Khune and Eric Mathoho deserve to be part of the National Under-23 side going to the Rio Olympics.
Coach Owen da Gama announced last week that the pair would be joining as part of the quota of overage players allowed at the tournament.
While Mathoho’s inclusion has been largely accepted, Khune’s selection has been criticised, with many feeling young Jody February should be given the chance to play in Brazil.
Despite the derision the announcement was greeted with Masuku maintains that both are worthy of their tickets to Brazil.
“As you know yourself, they are very, very smart players. They are going to bring a lot to the team obviously. With that we are hoping they are going to help us with their experience to do well in Rio,” Masuku tells KickOff.com.
“I’m not surprised [on their call-ups]. They’ve been doing well within the Bafana set-up so obviously they deserve to be part of the Rio [Olympics] as they are true South African stars.”
The 23-year-old went on to dispel any fears that Khune and Mathoho’s inclusion might destabilise the team.
“No, there’s nothing like that in football. Especially the two guys, they have a lot of experience so we are willing to learn from them and obviously to work with them,” he concludes.
