Swaziland among the best movers as they close in on FIFA's Top 100 ranked football teams

Posted: 14 July 2016 Time: 13:30

Swaziland are among the top six best African movers in the latest world rankings released by FIFA today.

Sihlangu Semnikati moved up 14 places from 117th to 103rd in the world, marking a remarkable rise for the Harris Bulunga-led team, who also moved 16 places in June from 133 to position 117.

Swaziland are only behind Kenya (43 places), Guinea-Bissau (40), Liberia (31), Libya (29) and Sierra Leone (18) as the best movers on the continent.

In June, Swaziland beat 63rd placed Guinea in the AFCON qualifiers and reached the semifinals of the COSAFA Cup, before losing 5-1 to eventual winners Bafana Bafana in the semi-finals.

Bulunga says the rise in the rankings is a reward for the hardwork the team has put in in recent months.

"I’ve seen the rankings. I’m happy about it because it shows how hard we have worked in the AFCON qualifiers and in the COSAFA cup, so it’s a reward for the hardowrk that the entire team has put in," Bulunga tells KickOff.com.

The Swazi coach has already set his sights on the next target.

"It’s just that maybe we still feel we need to break into the top 100, so that it can help us in future draws for qualifiers.

"It gives us pride to know that we are ranked above the likes of Togo, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Angola – sides who were known as powerhouses in Africa,” Bulunga concludes.

Swaziland’s best ever FIFA ranking was 92nd, which they achieved back in 1993.
