Mamelodi Sundowns defender Asavela Mbekile has rued the manner in which he cleared the ball which ultimately lead to Enyimba scoring in their 2-1 victory on Wednesday evening.
The Brazilians came out victorious over their Nigerian counterparts in their CAF Champions League Group B encounter at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Downs went 1-0 up just before the half-time break but Enyimba grabbed an equaliser in the 59th minute to make for a nervy final half-hour of the match, until Wayne Arendse eventually poked home the winner with 12 minutes to spare.
The hosts, though, would have felt they should have kept a clean sheet on the night, and Mbekile feels somewhat guilty for affording their opponents an opportunity to force pressure on the Sundowns defence.
“That was the only option I had, was to kick it out because if I had taken another touch the striker behind me could have taken the ball,” explained the versatile 29-year-old.
“I thought kicking it out was the better option but it resulted in a goal instead.”
Ultimately the former Moroka Swallows midfielder was delighted that his side found the winning goal and managed to collect all three points on the night.
“These were important points. We came here for the three points and we got it so we're happy about that,” he concluded.
