South Africa edged Lesotho 4-2 on penalties in the COSAFA Cup quarter-finals after 90 minutes produced a 1-1 draw in Windhoek, Namibia.

Bafana Bafana were playing their first match of the tournament against the Group B winners, who took the lead when Jane Thaba-Ntso lobbed new SuperSport United signing Reyaad Pieterse on the angle.

Shakes Mashaba's men hit back in the 65th minute through a header from close range by Orlando Pirates midfielder Gift Motupa.

Motupa, though, was sent off with five minutes to go after receiving a second caution at Sam Nujoma Stadium.

Bafana, however, prevailed in the shoot-out, with Pieterse making two saves and Deolin Mekoa slotting the winning kick to set up a semi-final with Zambia or Swaziland.

Mashaba and assistant coach Owen da Gama are using the competition to prepare for the upcoming Rio Olympics.
