Mamelodi Sundowns set to release Katlego Mashego

Posted: 14 June 2016 Time: 21:57

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed that the club have decided against renewing the contract of veteran striker Katlego Mashego.

Mashego has not been included in The Brazilians squad that departed for Algeria ahead of their CAF Champions League Group B opener against ES Setif on Saturday.

The 34-year-old was reduced to a bit-part player over the course of last season, as he made just three starts and nine substitute appearances in all competitions, with his contract set to expire at the end of this month.

Mosimane has since confirmed that Mashego will be issued with his clearance and is free to search for opportunities at a club of his choice.

"Mashego was registered [for CAF] - you saw him playing - but his contract is ending, and he has the right not to continue," said 'Jingles' ahead of the team's departure for Algers via Istanbul, Turkey on Tuesday evening.

"He feels that maybe at this point in time he should be looking for another team because we have made him aware that we are not going to renew his contract for next year.

"In his own discretion, he's decided that this is the time he should look ahead to his future [rather] than to be concentrating on the last 15 days [of his contract].

"I mean we can't balme him but, also, he has a contract so we'll see what we do with that."

Mosimane also revealed that Liberian attacker Anthony Laffor has not been included in the travelling squad due to "disciplinary" reasons, while a number of other key players are out with the flu virus.

"Teko's got flu but we brought him in [because hopefully] in two days, by Saturday, he'll be okay. [Tiyani] Mabunda, Bangaly [Soumahoro] and Cuthbert [Malajila] all have flu," he added.

"Anthony [Laffor] is not with us because of disciplinary issues within the team."
