Maritzburg United captain Kurt Lentjies and chairman Farouk Kadodia were brought to tears after escaping relegation in dramatic fashion.
Lentjies, by far his side’s standout performer this season, was suspended for the final game against Jomo Cosmos but watched on as Evans Rusike scored two late goals to secure survival.
“You can see how pumped my eyes are from all the crying. It’s been an emotional season for us, whole season we’ve been battling … when there were 10 minutes left to go, we don’t give up, we don’t give up and we keep going no matter what,” he told SuperSport.
“People were writing us off but we believe that we are going to dedicate every work that we do to God and just do all the hard work and leave the rest of to God and I can’t even explain how happy I am.”
Kadodia embraced his captain crying tears of joy as the relief of escaping the drop sunk in.
“Kurt told me a long time ago that we’re not going down. and this result today, the character and the will of all the players showed us that we are the team that should have been a long, long way up the ladder,” he added.
“I’m very proud for Pietermaritzburg as a city, for the fans who travelled up for this game, and also the KZN province cannot survive with one team, we all need more than one team, and we need more teams.”
