SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams says he is surprised by reports linking him with a move to Orlando Pirates and insists no contact has been made.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to The Buccaneers, with Reyaad Pieterse expected to complete his move to Matsatsantsa in the next few weeks.
Pirates are also expected to release Felipe Ovono at the end of the season after he struggled for game-time, leaving Williams to compete for the number one jersey with Brighton Mhlongo, who was today called up to the Bafana Bafana squad.
But Williams admits the rumours caught him by surprise, telling KickOff.com: “I must say that I was rather surprised when I read reports linking me with Pirates.
“I need to state on the record that I’ve had absolutely no contact with them. I still have a year plus an option left on my contract, which I intend to honour. I work with a quality coach in [Stuart] Baxter and we believe in him.
“I’m also very happy here and see no reason to leave. I’ve been here for almost six seasons and I like the environment, players and the staff.”
Williams adds that he is not threatened with reports that Pieterse may join SuperSport.
“In fact, I would welcome this move with open arms. Pieterse is a quality keeper that can add value to the team.
“I’m prepared to work very hard for my place – it will be healthy competition and I thrive on that.”
