Platinum Stars striker Ndumiso Mabena and goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela were lucky to escape unhurt after they were involved in an accident near the club’s Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus base in Phokeng on Saturday night.
One unnamed member of the club’s technical team was rushed to hospital following the accident, but his condition is not known.
Full details of the accident have not yet come to light but according to a witness who arrived at the scene, the players were driving in convoy after returning from their 1-1 away draw with Free State on Saturday afternoon.
Both of the cars the players were travelling in have been written off.
The incident will bring back unhappy memories for the Stars players. Earlier this season defender Thabiso Semenya lost his wife Thandeka in a car accident as he drove to the club’s home match against Kaizer Chiefs in March.
The Premier Soccer League has already endured tragedy on South Africa's roads this season - Ajax Cape Town defender Cecil Lolo was killed in a car accident in October, while Maritzburg United's Mondli Cele died in January.
