Baroka FC’s Thabiso Kutumela still tops First Division scoring charts

Posted: 18 April 2016 Time: 10:38

Baroka FC striker Thabiso Kutumela still finds himself at the summit of the National First Division goalscoring charts, despite not scoring in almost two months.

The 22-year-old started the season in fine form, notching up 12 goals by the turn of the year as Baroka stormed ahead in the NFD standings.

Kutumela has only scored in two matches in 2016 though, netting a brace against Highlands park in January, and another two against Cape Town All Stars in a 4-0 win on 20 February – the last time he netted in the League.

Despite a two-month drought, Kutumela still remains a healthy seven goals ahead of trio Cleopas Dube (Witbank Spurs), Siyabonga Nomvete (AmaZulu) and Siyanda Ngubo (Royal Eagles), their nine goals so far putting them joint-second on the scoring charts.

Just a goal behind those three are another trio on eight goals for the campaign, namely Katlego Mphela (Royal Eagles), Siphiwe Gwala (FC Cape Town) and Kutumela’s Baroka teammate Nkosinathi Christy Ndlovu.

With five games to go in the League, it seems unlikely that Kutumela will be caught at the top, as the talented forward eyes a move up to the PSL, with Orlando Pirates reportedly keeping close tabs.

Following their 3-1 loss to Vasco da Gama on the weekend, Baroka's lead at the top of the NFD standings has been slashed to just one point over Highlands Park, with Royal Eagles and Witbank Spurs a further four points back.

NFD’s top ten scorers:

Thabiso Kutumela (Baroka FC) - 16
Cleopas Dube (Witbank Spurs) - 9
Siyabonga Nomvete (AmaZulu) - 9
Siyanda Ngubo (Royal Eagles) - 9
Katlego Mphela (Royal Eagles) - 8
Nkosinathi Christy Ndlovu (Baroka FC) - 8
Siphiwe Gwala (FC Cape Town) - 8
Jermaine Christian (Highlands Park) - 7
Roggert Nyundu (Black Leopards) - 7
Suhayl Allie (Santos) - 7
