Mpumalanga Black Aces inched above Kaizer Chiefs into fourth place on the table with a 2-0 victory at relegation-threatened Maritzburg United on Friday night.
Thabo Nodada scored the first Absa Premiership goal of his career shortly after the break before Judas Moseamedi added a second with 16 minutes left at Harry Gwala Stadium.
AmaZayoni have 41 points from 25 fixtures - a point more than Amakhosi, who they drew 2-2 with on Tuesday. Chiefs will play their game in hand against Ajax Cape Town at FNB Stadium on Saturday night.
Maritzburg remain at the foot of the standings with 16 points - four points behind nearest strugglers Jomo Cosmos and University of Pretoria, who likewise have six games left.
Both sides could have scored in the opening stanza, with Bhongolethu Jayiya squandering a great chance for Aces on the stroke of half-time, while Zimbabwean attacker Evans Rusike drew a good stop from Shu-Aib Walters at the other end.
Nodada, however, broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with a shot from outside the box.
The Team of Choice sought a way back, but were dealt another blow when a save by Glenn Verbauwhede rebounded into the net off Moseamedi in the latter stages.
Muhsin Ertugral's charges managed to protect their lead, thereby breaking an eight-game winless run in the league and intensifying the pressure on their ailing opponents.
