Mamelodi Sundowns conceded in time added on to lose 1-0 to AS Vita in Kinshasa in the CAF Champions League.
Kule Mbombo scored late on from a rebound as the Brazilians opted to sit back for most of the second half, meaning they have a mountain to climb in the second leg in two weeks’ time.
Sundowns started well enough, without really creating too many chances.
Tebogo Langerman fired an ambitious 40-metre attempt over the crossbar early on, while Leonardo Castro had his close-range shot deflected for a corner after being teed up by Keagan Dolly.
Dolly almost set up Castro again on 16 minutes, but for a last-ditch interception by a defender.
However, the two best chances of the half fell to the hosts. Just past the half-hour mark Firmin Ndombe hit the side-netting after being played in, before Bernard Morrison's shot on 45 minutes shaved the far-post.
AS Vita had by far the better of the second half, though it could have been so different had Themba Zwane passed to the unmarked Castro rather than shooting wide himself.
Denis Onyango was the difference between Sundowns still being in the tie and not, pulling off a number of fine saves, including on 54 minutes to deny the impressive Morrison.
The Ghanaian flashed another shot wide with five minutes to go – and it should have proved the warning sign as he was again afforded too much space in time added on.
He fired a powerful shot which Onyango got a hand to, but Mbombo was there to bury into the roof of the net.
Sundowns: Onyango, Mphahlele, Nthethe, Arendse, Langerman, Dolly, Kekana, Mbekile, Mashaba, T Zwane (S Zwane 87), Castro (Malajila 61)
