South Africa and Cameroon drew 0-0 in what was a must-win 2017 African Nations Cup qualifier at Moses Mabhida Stadium. This way for a detailed match summary.
FT: The game ends goalless, the first time South Africa have ever not scored against Cameroon.
90+3': Bafana keep pressing before Kekana shoots over, and that's all she wrote.
90+1': NO PENALTY! Serero finally breaks into the area, goes down, referee gives nothing and then Nxumalo's shot is blocked! That could have been a winner from the Ajax Cape Town man.
81-90': Bafana trying the same attacks they were trying through the middle in the first half and Cameroon are defending easily, with Serero's quick one-twos not working at all. TUSSLE! Serero barges into Salli to get the ball, he takes exception, staring match, Nhlapo diffuses the bomb. Frustration. Then a loose ball drops for Masango outside the box, he chests it down and lets it take a bounce but his wayward shot on the volley sums up Bafana's attack in this game. It's wide.
71'-80': CHANCE! Gabuza meets Hlanti's corner at the near post, unmarked, but he can't hit the target. SUB: Nxumalo (ON) for Gabuza (OFF). Hlanti has another go from a direct free-kick from wide right but Ondoa makes a good save diving low. Tempo of the game disrrupted a bit due to stoppages and subs, and a general lack of cohesion from the home side.
61'-70': LET-OFF! Aboubaker finds space behind Mathoho, chests it brilliantly, then volleys over from close range! THEN BIG SAVE, BIG DECISION! Khune does brilliantly to smother Ndi's shot, and is then fortunate not to concede a penalty from the follow-up! He doesn't touch the ball as Ndi follows up the blocked shot, Khune challenges and goes down with the striker, ref tells the attacker to get up. Ndi was totally unmarked on the left side, Khune furious with his defenders. ANOTHER BIG DECISION as Aboubaker - already booked - kicks out at Jali, a wild kick from behind, and the referee doesn't take any action. Unbelievable call.
51’-60’:SUB: Mabena (ON) for Rantie (OFF, on a stretcher). Gabuza wins a corner, his first contribution of the game, he then gets onto the end of a good ball into the area, he's on the byline, but he miskicks his attempted cross. Looks like the coach is going to take him off. Masango wins a free-kick, Hlanti takes it from wide right position, comfortable save for Ondoa again. THEN SO CLOSE! Kekana lets rip from distance, the crowd rises in anticipation, just wide of the upright! Great technique on the shot.
46'-50': SUB: Nhlapo (ON) for Hlatshwayo (OFF) as the second half gets underway. Jali wins a free-kick in a good position just outside the 'D' with a 'Zidane roulette' but Hlanti wastes the chance as a baloons it over.
HT: SHORT REPORT - Bafana started well and asked questions of Cameroon but started to run out of ideas as the half wore on, with the visitors looking more and more comfortable dealing with South Africa's attacks. More creativity will be needed in the second half.
41’-45’: Jali and Hlatshwayo lose two duels around the centre circle but Mathoho cleans up a dangerous-looking Cameroon move with a great tackle. Masango starts a quick counter-attack but Rantie opts to turn back and then plays a poor pass straight to the Cameroon left-back ... groans from the crowd.
30’-40’: Bafana’s best chance so far as Rantie wins the ball high up the pitch, plays it to Serero who tries to tee up Rantie again for the finish but a defensive touch takes the chance away. Hlatshwayo is then called into action in defence as he makes a good block with Ndi breaking dangerously into the area. First sign of real danger from Cameroon. Aboubaker then flashes a powerful shot wide of Khune's near post but it was never troubling the goalkeeper.
21'-30': Cameroon's first shot at goal drifts wide from Salli. Serero gets the crowd on its feet with some neat touches and combines with Jali. Bafana playing with some swagger, their confidence building, still controlling the tempo. Cameroon have another shot wide from a direct free-kick from Aboubakar and also show their first sign of danger from set-pieces, but with no harm to Khune's goal.
11'-20': Bafana settle into the game and start to control possession. Hlanti is in the thick of the action and puts in a great cross to the far stick where Hlatshwayo is totally unmarked, but his downward header from a tight angle is saved by Ondoa! Good chance.
0'-10': Hlanti gets the first shot on target from a direct free-kick outside the box that is comfortably saved by Ondoa. The Bidvest Wits left-back also puts in a disappointing cross that goes out for a goal-kick.
Bafana: Khune (c), Hlatshwayo (Nhlapo 46'), Coetzee, Mathoho, Hlanti, Jali, Kekana, Masango, Serero, Rantie (Mabena 51'), Gabuza (Nxumalo 75')
Cameroon: Ondoa, Nyom, Matip, Kamgang, Abang, Aboubakar, Salli, Henri, Chedjou, Ndi, Siani
