Siboniso Gaxa fully aware of CAF Champions League task

Posted: 29 February 2016 Time: 21:48

Kaizer Chiefs defender Siboniso Gaxa says he is aware of what awaits them in the first round of the CAF Champions League following their easy progression from the preliminary round.

Chiefs advanced into the first round after being handed a walk over 3-0 victory in the second leg of their preliminary round contest against Volcan Club de Moroni after the Comoros club failed to arrive in Durban.

Chiefs had already won 4-0 in the first leg and will now square off against Ivorian powerhouse ASEC Mimosas next month.

Les Mimosas have won Ligue 1 a record 24 times, were the 1998 Champions League winners and have reached at least the group stages in nine of their 13 appearances in Africa’s premier club competition.

“We have played them before and I know that they are a club with a good history,” Gaxa tells

The West Africans – who are regular exporters of players to Europe – were Chiefs’ opponents as recently as two years ago in the 2014 Confederations Cup Play-Off round after falling out of the Champions League. ASEC won that contest 3-1 on aggregate with Chiefs choosing to send a weakened team for the return leg in Abidjan.

Their latest meeting comes after ASEC got past AS CotonTchad of Chad 1-0 on aggregate in their preliminary round tie.

“We will apply ourselves against them with the intention of winning and progressing,” Gaxa said. “There is no need for us to be hoping that we could have played another team and not them. This is Champions League and so you have to play the best.”

Chiefs will host the first leg on the weekend of March 11-13 before travelling to Ivory Coast for the return leg the following week.
