Phakamani Mahlambi's set for lengthy absence due to knee ligament injury

Bidvest Wits have been dealt a massive injury blow with news that striker Phakamani Mahlambi could be ruled out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

Mahlambi had to be substituted late in their 2-1 win over University of Pretoria last week Friday, and was carried off the pitch to avoid applying weight onto his right leg after being on the receiving end of a crunching tackle in midfield.

Wits coach Gavin Hunt says “it doesn’t look good at all” and adds that they are fearing the worst as they await a second opinion on the diagnosis of the injury.

“It doesn’t look good hey … we’re waiting to get another opinion but it doesn’t look good at all,” Hunt tells

“The doctors have informed me that it’s knee ligament damage, but we’ll confirm once we get the second opinion.”

When asked how long he suspects the 18-year-old to be sidelined, Hunt gives an inconclusive answer but alludes that Mahlambi might even miss the Rio Olympic tournament, which is scheduled to run from 3-20 August later this year.

“I’m suspecting he’ll be out for the rest of the season, we’ll have to see, but he’s meant to go the Olympics as well so I don’t know … it’s not looking good,” adds a dispirited Hunt.

The news comes at a disappointing time for the teenage sensation, who has enjoyed a stellar debut season thus far, managing four goals and three assists in 12 starts.

The Clever Boys face a tough task away to bottom side Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium this evening, with kick-off set for 19h30.
