Thobani Mncwango sets sights on goalscorer award

Posted: 24 February 2016 Time: 12:37

Polokwane City striker Thobani Mncwango believes he has a realistic chance of winning the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award this season.

Mncwango’s conversion rate of nine League goals in 14 starts is second only to Ajax Cape Town striker Prince Nxumalo’s 10 goals in 10 starts.

Collins Mbesuma of Mpumalanga Black Aces still leads the race with 12 goals.

“With nine games remaining and with the kind of form I am in the top goalscorer award has suddenly become something that I am taking interest in,” Mncwango tells

The former Baroka forward scored his ninth League goal last night against Kaizer Chiefs.

“As long as I stay humble and keep listening to my coaches with the support of my teammates I believe I can challenge for the award. All I need to do is maintain my focus. Right now I am feeling encouraged considering that the leading scorer is just three ahead of me with so many games still left to play.

“I genuinely feel I can compete for the award this season because I am in the kind of form that gives me belief that I will score again in the next match. If I score a brace or a hat-trick I will suddenly be next to the leading scorer.

“I just hope that my goals also help the team to gain points because what counts the most is the team,” Mncwango adds.

The 28-year-old has found a new lease of life under Julio Leal, having not been favoured by Kosta Papic.

“Though I wasn’t Papic’s favourite I never gave up and I am glad Leal has shown confidence in me,” he adds.

Mncwango joined an exclusive club when he netted four goals against SuperSport United last month. Find out more about the records he broke in the latest edition of KICK OFF magazine.
