Shakes Mashaba will be able to lean on one of his players for advice on how Cameroon will set-up in South Africa’s crucial African Nations Cup double-header qualification matches next month.
The Indomitable Lions appointed Belgian coach Hugo Broos at the weekend, no stranger to South African players … and one in particular.
Broos wanted to sign current Bafana Bafana right-back Anele Ngcongca when he was in charge of Anderlecht a decade ago, but the deal broke down when the coach was sacked shortly afterwards.
Broos moved to Genk though and kept up his pursuit of Ngcongca, who was then at National First Division side FC Fortune.
He finally landed his man in 2007 and Ngcongca’s first season in Belgium was under the co-coaching of Broos and Ronny Van Geneugden.
Ngcongca could no doubt give plenty of insight into the coaching methods of Broos and how he likes his teams to play.
The Belgian coach later went on to work in Greece, Turkey and Algeria, before landing the Cameroon job as a replacement for Volker Finke, who was axed last year.
Bafana must win both home and away clashes against Cameroon in late March to stand a chance of reaching the Nations Cup finals in Gabon next year.
