Daine Klate, James Keene injury doubts for Wits vs Tuks clash

Bidvest Wits midfielder Daine Klate could be ruled out of this Friday’s Absa Premiership clash with University of Pretoria due to a knee injury he sustained against Kaizer Chiefs.

Klate missed the Clever Boys’ trip to the Seychelles over the weekend, where they beat Lightstars FC 3-0 in their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg match, after suffering a knock to his right knee in the 1-0 defeat to Amakhosi last week.

The 30-year-old winger returned to full training on Monday but suffered a knock to the same knee on Tuesday, and sat out the rest of the morning session.

He is now expected to go for scans on Wednesday to determine the exact extent of the injury, which is suspected to be a ruptured ligament.

Coach Gavin Hunt confirmed that Klate is likely to be ruled out of this weekend’s league clash at home to the Tshwane side, while striker James Keene could face a late fitness test as defender Nazeer Allie returns from injury.

“Keene is battling with a knee [injury], I don’t know whether he’s fit enough for this weekend. Daine looks like he could be out too – we’ll have to see,” Hunt tells KickOff.com.

“Nazeer is training but he hasn’t played for three-four weeks; Buhle is back from his red card suspension so we gave him game-time in Seychelles. We’re running a bit thin at the moment.”

Meanwhile, Bongani Khumalo is also ruled out of this weekend’s tie due to an accumulation of four yellow cards, and Phumlani Ntshangase returns from the same suspension.
