Flying Eagles sweep past Egypt

Flying Eagles beat Egypt

Posted: 2009-01-19 15:31

Goals from Kingsley Udoh and Yakubu Alfa got Ladan Bosso's Flying Eagles off to the best possible start in the African Youth Championships on Monday with a 2-0 win against Egypt.

Udoh headed in Alfa's cross early in the 35th minute, before Alfa himself profited from a sublime piece of work from substitute Gbolahan Salami to unleash an exquisite half volley.

In between Okeychukwu Uchebo had a goal inexplicably disallowed, and the Egyptians created opportunities of their own, the best being a penalty shout that was ignored by the referee after Matthew Edile scythed down an opponent in the box.

But it was the young Nigerians who created the better opportunities, despite a slow start.

Alfa had an early freekick saved by the goalkeeper, and Rabiu Ibrahim forced another fine save from the Egyptian goalkeeper with a curling effort.

Salami and Uchebo missed a succession of chances to put Nigeria out of sight, but the Flying Eagles kept it tight at the back and claimed the win.

The midfield is super. The defence isnt bad, but little work should be done there. The attack is far from being average.

Overall, a very good first match. Winning next match should give us the ticket.

Congrats Nigerians. This year is looking good for us.

The Boys did very well to be candid. There wasnt much playing to the gallery, which I really relished. We also lost a lot of chances especially through the substitute, Salami, however, Im excusing him as first matches are not usually that easy.
The midfield was superb. Rabiu is fantastic and together with Lukman, I think thats the Super Eagles future midfield, God being with them. My fear though is, what happens when Rabiu is not there?

stan'Lee: 2009-01-19 18:29

Great news...Great result...!!!
Pls we shouldn't be carried away.

The team should concentrate for the next match against SA.
They should not overlook or underrate them.
If we can come out with a victory too in that match, then we have a good step not only at qualifing for the world cup but also a good chance to lift the AYC trophy.

Bosso and boys should take and early wash, relax and later watch the other Group B match between SA & Ivory Coast for tactical reasons!!!

I wish them well...!!!

Manebay: 2009-01-19 19:33

Now Bosso is suddenly becoming a hero. What will he become if he wins the cup? Naija boyz sabi criticize. Well it is just the first match. This team will win the tournament.
Reason: No one gave them a chance like Siasia when they started. Our teams flop when we are expecting much.
Where are those Ghanian boys? Now they will know that WAFU is different from AYC. Yeye blackout boys! Does flying chickens beat pharaohs? No! it is only the Flying Eagles that spanks the rank and files!

Doyin: 2009-01-20 01:07

Welldone boyz.Guys, don`t be deceived by this victory.Bosso remains unqualified for that post.I stand to be challenged.Even,an imbecile would do well with this team.this forum is dry these days..!Where are my fellas..,Stan,freeman,coache,frank,Frank1 and others?..I hope all of una dey well sha.

Shijo: 2009-01-20 10:15

I agree with Doyin. I watched the match, the boys have an evident understanding of themselves, they were really a class above the Egyptians.

However, the boys tended to lose concentration during the match, they became lethargic and slow at a point. Haruna's work rate was just average during the match, he was substituted. Rabiu Ibrahim is a good player, no doubt, but he is predictable. He is leftfooted, so his dribbles are almost always to his left, and if he is to release a pass, it is with his left. If he came up against a highly technical side, he will be neutralised. The jersey No 4 - N****wo, was very good. He had a commanding presence, defends well, has good vision and turns well. Changes direction of the game at will.

However, Bosso, obviously read the game well, because the changes he made had an impact. When Salami was introduced, the attack became sharper and they created more chances (and missed several)

oscar : 2009-01-20 10:41

@ Shijo, I am confused at your comment. You started by agreeing with Doyin, but your comment is contrary to Doyin's. Doyin did not praise Bosso in any way, but you did. In what way do you agree with Doyin then?

All I know is that the team played well and Bosso is trying to prove critics wrong.

@ Doyin, welcome back. This is a new year, lets support Bosso if he continues to give us victories and put smile on our faces. At this stage, we do not want a new coach to start with a new strategy and change the team work the team already has. Bosso and Iroha are doing a good job so far.

Shijo: 2009-01-20 12:06

@ Oscar, I agree with Doyin's comments that "Bosso remains unqualified for this post. Even,an imbecile would do well with this team".

I pointed out that the boys did beat Egypt, because the Egyptian team was not in their class, and that I could see some grey areas in their display. However, I commented that Bosso did well in the changes he made.

I have been one of the staunchest critics of Bosso, but if he does well, I would also say so.

Sammy: 2009-01-20 12:08

Coaches are rated based on results. So far so good for Bosso. One win out of one is a pass mark by any standard. I wish him good luck in other matches.

Godwin: 2009-01-20 13:45

stop james peter from affecting those boys.

GreenBlood4life: 2009-01-21 17:46
