Ajax Cape Town winger Franklin Cale could be out for up to eight weeks with a broken cheekbone sustained during their 3-1 loss to Chippa United at East London’s Buffalo Stadium.
Cale picked up the injury during the first half of Sunday's match following a strong challenge from Chippa captain James Okwuosa but was determined enough to stay on the pitch and play out the full 90 minutes.
Initially Cale thought it was just a minor injury but subsequent scans have shown that it is far more serious than what was expected.
KickOff.com can confirm that the experienced Cale will undergo an operation next week Tuesday.
Although he has found the net just once this season for Ajax, the 32-year-old has contributed immensely to their attacking play and been a vital cog in the Ajax wheel.
“I can say I’m frustrated but that also wouldn’t paint the full story on how I feel right now,” Cale tells this website.
“I mean, I was just getting back to my best in term of my fitness and playing regularly and now this…
“I even suggested that I play with a mask like they do in the English Premier League but was told that wouldn’t be wise at all. I cannot have any contact and will have to just do light training I suppose.”
