Best & Worst of the Weekend

Posted: 25 January 2016 Time: 11:36

It was another fascinating weekend in the Absa Premiership – here picks the best and worst on offer.

Xola Mlambo hit a brilliant strike as Chippa United hammered Ajax Cape Town 3-1, but Lucky Mohomi’s winner for Free State Stars against Bloemfontein Celtic was a goal of pure skill. A floated ball into the box needed one, assured touch before a first-time volley into the top corner.

Mbongeni Mzimela came close after four incredible saves to keep Platinum Stars in the game against Kaizer Chiefs, before Eleazar Rodgers eventually handed Dikwena a late victory. But in a league where strikers often struggle to hit double figures, James Keene’s hat-trick for Bidvest Wits against Polokwane City showed the kind of composure and awareness that is more often than not lacking.

Orlando Pirates striker Lehlohonolo Majoro came close – a penalty miss after an all-too-cool run-up, before the miss of the season from half-a-metre out. Given the club's current predicament, it was even more crucial. But the Sundowns note debacle, where the technical team allegedly sent notes to the players to waste time, is ridiculous. The whole idea behind the incident notwithstanding … who writes notes?? Why not just send a verbal message between players?

“I love beating Pirates. I don't have any grudges but I just love beating them because they brought me up. If your father has taught you something, you have to go out and show him that 'I learnt from you, and I'm better than you'.” – Jomo Sono via Sowetan
