SuperSport United coach Gordon Igesund respects Bongani Khumalo’s decision to leave

SuperSport United coach Gordon Igesund says it was always going to be difficult to keep defender Bongani Khumalo on the bench and respects his decision to leave Matsatsantsa A Pitori.

Khumalo, who struggled with form since joining United from Tottenham Hotspur, has since signed with Bidvest Wits where he hopes to receive more game time under former coach Gavin Hunt.

Having spent the majority of his stay in Pretoria on the bench, featuring in just ten matches, SuperSport coach Igesund felt it wouldn’t have been fair to keep the former Bafana Bafana captain at the club.

"Khumalo is a great professional,” Igesund said. "But you can’t keep a high profile player like him on the bench and not playing on a regular basis. He needs to play regularly and a decision had to be made between him and the club.

"He had the option and chose to move on.”

Igesund believes the growth of talented young defender Denwin Farmer would have been hampered if Khumalo had not moved on, insisting he has to be fair with all the members of his squad.

"I have young Denwin Farmer, only 18 years of age,” Igesund said. "My choice was that I am going to have a high profile player on the bench and a high profile player keeping out a youngster doing well?

"If you remember it was difficult for Khumalo because at that stage when he was playing we lost four games in a row and when had a stomach bug, he didn’t travel with us to Chippa United … I took a youngster and played him. We won and we have not been beaten since then.

"I am not a coach that discredits big names, I have to be honest and fair to the players. It was a decision made by Bongani and the club and I wish him well wherever he is going,” he added.
