Bidvest Wits midfielder Jabulani Shongwe believes new teammate Bongani Khumalo will be key to the Clever Boys’ ambitions of winning the Absa Premiership title for the first time.
Khumalo, a former Bafana Bafana captain with 2010 World Cup experience, recently terminated his contract at SuperSport United.
“Bongani will definitely add something in our team because he has won the league three times before, he has played overseas, and as a club we definitely needed his experience and quality,” says Shongwe.
“What I like most about him is that just like our captain [Thulani Hlatshwayo], he is also a leader. Remember we still have players like ‘Tyson’. That's the reason I say our puzzle is complete. The coach wouldn't have signed him for no reason and they've worked together before, that alone will be a good thing for the team.”
Though he admits that Wits players have their eyes firmly fixed on the league title, Shongwe says his team will focus on one game at a time as they've been doing since the beginning of the season.
Shongwe believes what might work to their advantage is that most of his teammates are very determined to win something in football for the first time in their careers.
“We are not looking at how many games are left and how many we must win in order to be crowned the PSL champions. There's still 18 games left, we take it one game at a time,” he explains.
“But we know that if we can reach 58 points that will be a good thing, we will be halfway there. The plus side for us is that we are all determined to win something as Bidvest Wits players.”
Wits signed English striker James Keene on the first day of the transfer window.
