Roger De Sa’s goalkeeping headache at Ajax Cape Town

Ajax Cape Town enter 2016 with a ‘good headache’ regarding their man between the sticks, with three quality goalkeepers at their disposal as coach Roger De Sa ponders who to start in goal.

Following a year out on the sidelines, talented 21-year-old Brandon Peterson last month featured in a club friendly, his first 45 minutes on the pitch since breaking his leg in late 2014. Fellow young gloveman Jody February was the South Africa Under-23 side’s hero as they qualified for the Olympics following their third-place finish in Senegal, while Anssi Jaakkola remains the regular starter in the first team.

The Finnish shot-stopper is keen on returning to Europe, with coach De Sa more than happy with the quality in his goalkeeping department to provide cover when he eventually leaves.

“I think we are in a very fortunate situation at this club, with guys like Anssi, Brandon and Jody,” coach De Sa told KickOff.com. “I don’t think there’s another club in the country that can boast that.

"Anssi has always made his intentions felt about going back to Europe, we know that he’s always wanted to go back, and when you know you’ve got this type of cover, it really facilitates things for Anssi as well, so hopefully it goes his way, and we have fantastic goalkeepers in Brandon and Jody.”

De Sa says there is good competition between all three goalies at the club, and says he will select whoever is best on the day.

“We have to work it in a positive way,” he says. “It keeps them on their toes and really working hard and being focused, which is great. You don’t want to have a comfort zone where a goalkeeper knows he’s going to play, week in and week out.

“Even now, Anssi has seen Jody’s performances [at Afcon U-23]and he’s thinking, ‘Wow, that’s great, it’s good that he’s going to push me and keep me motivated’.

“And the fact that Brandon is coming back, we must make it work in our favour. Competition must be healthy, they’ll keep on working hard, and the best one will play.”

Ajax take on Bloemfontein Celtic in their first match of 2016 next Friday.
