Steve Komphela praise for Lorenzo Gordinho

Posted: 22 December 2015 Time: 12:45

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela feels there is much more to come from defender Lorenzo Gordinho following his solid display in his side’s win over Bidvest Wits.

In just his fourth PSL start of the campaign, the young centre-back produced a Man-of-the-Match display, netting the winner as Amakhosi edged the Clever Boys 2-1 in Cape Town.

Although preferring not to single out individual players, Komphela says he was pleased with his centre-back pairing against Wits, as he started Gordinho alongside the experienced Morgan Gould, who returned for his first League start of the season following a long injury lay-off.

“We don’t like singling out players at Chiefs,” the Glamour Boys’ coach said. “We all have a responsibility to perform our duties, but I think the pairing, with the test they went through against Wits, the result says they did okay. You can always do better, and there’s always room for improvement.

“Morgan comes off a long period of injury – it’s not easy to recover from an Achilles tendon injury and play.”

Komphela then revealed he was a little disappointed in Gordinho’s comments to him after the game, but says he has faith in the defender to continuing growing and improving in the Chiefs jersey.

“Gordinho came to me after the match, and I didn’t not appreciate it when he said, ‘Thank you for believing in me’,” Komphela revealed. “It’s not about believing in him. It’s about him, and what he gives to us. He knows as soon as he signs for this team, he has a responsibility.

“And if you perform your duties, we shall do what is right and play you. He’s been doing well, so we give him the confidence – he’s only 21, and can only grow.

“And when Morgan reaches 39, 40, Gordinho will be a better defender, so he can only gather experience from that.”
