SAFA president Danny Jordaan feels the national U-23 team's qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games illustrates the merits of 'Vision 2022'.
Owen da Gama's charges booked their spot at the global showpiece by beating Senegal 3-1 on penalties in a CAF U-23 AFCON third place playoff in Dakar on Saturday.
South African football will also be represented at the Rio Olympics by Banyana Banyana, who secured their place with a victory over Equatorial Guinea in Bata on October 18.
SAFA launched Vision 2022 as a technical master plan, aimed at having all national teams ranked in the top three in Africa and the top 20 in the world.
“This has been an extraordinary year for our national teams,” said Jordaan.
“Wow, what can I say apart from congratulating coach Owen da Gama and the boys. This has been some year for our national teams starting from Bafana Bafana, U-23, Banyana Banyana, U-20 (Amajita), U-17 (Amajimbos) and our U-20 women’s national team which just missed next year’s World Cup finals in Papua Guinea on the very last match.
“Now, everyone can see what we mean by Vision 2022 when it comes to preparing winning teams both on the continent and globally.
“We as SAFA have just announced a huge profit of over R40 million at the 25th SAFA Congress on Saturday and now our U-23 side has just put the icing on the cake with this marvellous result. Take a bow Owen and the boys.”
