Andries ‘Local is Lekker’ Sebola, a free-scoring super sub in his prime at Orlando Pirates, finished the 1994 season with 17 League goals and six in cup matches while at modest Real Rovers.
Sebola says the blame of the lack of goals in our soccer must rest with the coaches.
“Of course, the blame could be put partly down to the current generation’s lack of hunger and aggression in the box. But the bottom line is that coaches are playing defensive football to protect their jobs. In the current trend, if they score once then they instruct everyone to defend so that they protect that lead.
“The coaches need to change the tactics and not play one striker upfront like we see happening now. How do you score without a partner upfront? Benni McCarthy scores goals at Blackburn because he has a partner, but at Bafana he has struggled since he returned because he is playing all alone.
“And that is the reason why I don’t see Fani’s record being broken in the near future. That money will merely stay put at the PSL for another five or six years. The incentive will not change anything,” Sebola adds.
