Derrick Spencer: Kaizer Chiefs' Hendrick Ekstein must work on being a team player

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Derrick Spencer feels rising talent Hendrick Ekstein must work on being a team player.

Ekstein has quickly become a fan-favourite at Naturena after gaining promotion to the first team following some eye-catching displays in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge last season.

The 24-year-old has started the last three league games for Chiefs, and naturally he will hope to keep his place in the side for Wednesday's Telkom Knockout final with Mamelodi Sundowns in Durban.

"He [Ekstein] needs to work on playing as a team player and try to help out whether he's playing on the left or right side of attack. And other than that he's a very good player," Spencer tells

Spencer says only time will tell if Ekstein can emulate the likes of ex-Chiefs attackers Stanton Fredericks and Thabo Mooki.

"To be in the level of Stanton Fredericks and Thabo Mooki it is big shoes to fill. But he's got potential and is a very good player and time will tell. But we just have to wait and see.

"He's an offensive player and his main focus is to attack a lot more."
