Thabiso Kutumela on course to beat Phumelele Bhengu's 2014/15 NFD goals tally

Baroka FC striker Thabiso Kutumela is well on course to better Phumelele Bhengu’s tally from last season of 22 goals in the NFD.

As the last round of NFD fixtures of the year approaches on the weekend of December 19, Kutumela leads the scoring chart with 12 goals after 12 rounds of matches.

The 22-year-old, who was called up to the South Africa Under-23 squad recently but not selected for Owen da Gama’s final squad that went to Senegal for the CAF U-23 Afcon, already has twice as many goals as his next challenger.

That would be his Baroka teammate Nkosinathi Ndlovu, who has six goals.

AmaZulu’s Zambian striker Bornwell Mwape and Witbank Spurs’ Cleopas Dube both have five goals, while six players have scored four including Royal Eagles’ big-name signing Katlego Mphela.

Last season six players reached double figures in goals in the NFD, although the two who are still playing in the second tier – Roggert Nyundu (Black Leopards) and Walter Maponyane (Royal Eagles) – are nowhere close to replicating that again this season.

Those players who got promoted – Charlton Mashumba and Bryce Aka of Jomo Cosmos – have started modestly in the top tier having scored just five goals between them as Ezenkosi continue to find their feet.

But with 12 goals already, Kutumela will fancy his chances of surpassing Bhengu’s 2014/15 tally of 22 goals as there are 18 matches still to play.

In contrast, Bhengu has not yet scored in the Absa Premiership and has made just four substitute appearances since moving to SuperSport United at the end of last season.
