Thibang Phete makes his starting debut for Portugal’s Vitoria Guimaraes

South African youngster Thibang Phete made his debut in the Portuguese Primeira Liga when he lined up for Vitoria Guimaraes against Boavista on Saturday night.
Phete has been a regular in Vitoria’s second team this season but received his debut start for the first team, must to the surprise of many of the club’s fans on social media.
The 21-year-old Phete is another product of Farouk Khan’s Stars of Africa Academy, along with the likes of May Mahlangu, Tokelo Rantie and Sibusiso Khumalo.
He however only played 45 minutes, being substituted for Brazilian Otavinho at half-time with his side trailing 1-0.
Vitoria did however get back into the game, equalising in the 66th minute through Henri Dourado before Cafu’s late goal secured all three points, the win lifting them to 11th place in the Portuguese standings after 11 matches played.
Phete signed for Vitoria from third-tier Tourizense at the start of this season having been one of five South Africans playing at the club in the last campaign.
Pule Maraisane has since moved on to the Swedish second-tier with GAIS, but others who were there are defender Thamsanqa Ngobeza, and midfielders Tshepo Matsemela and Tlotlo Leepile.
Vitoria are the club that have been heavily linked with a move for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu at the end of the season.
