Free State Stars coach Ernst Middendorp was impressed with Sello Japhta's PSL debut against Mamelodi Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Japhta, who was recently promoted from the club's Diski Challenge side, played the full 90 minutes against the Brazilians, who ran out 3-1 victors in Atteridgeville.

The 20-year-old typically operates in midfield or upfront.

“It was good to see the youngster Sello Japhta playing his first PSL match and I personally think he did exceptionally well,” Middendorp told Stars' website.

Japhta was naturally pleased to make his topflight bow but he was disappointed to end up on the losing team.

“I am really delighted to have played my first PSL match, especially playing the entire 90 minutes,” he said.

“Unfortunately it was not a good feeling at the end, ending up on the losing side like that.”

He added: “I still have a lot to learn of course. I won’t put any pressure on myself. I will just continue to work hard at improving my game.”
