Roger De Sa back Abel Mabaso as Ajax Cape Town's right-back

Ajax Cape Town coach Roger De Sa is confident right-back Abel Mabaso will be able to fill the void left by the late Cecil Lolo.

Lolo tragically passed away in a car accident last month, leaving a massive hole in defence as the club’s first-choice right-back.

Yet Mabaso, on loan to the Urban Warriors from Mamelodi Sundowns, has made four starts in that position since moving to the Cape at the start of the season, even playing alongside Lolo in matches against Downs and University of Pretoria, and De Sa has faith in the 24-year-old to continue as he has in recent games.

“We’ve been fortunate that in the last few games, Mabaso has played there, so at least he’s played, with Lolo on the bench or in a different position,” De Sa tells “So there’s not such a big burden on poor Mabaso, who I’m sure does not want that feeling anyway.

“So in the middle of all the mishaps, we were fortunate in that. Abel has played there many, many times and he’s played for Ajax quite a few times, so he just continues.”

De Sa admits Lolo’s loss has left a huge gap in the team, and although he is eyeing a few players as back-up, will not be rushed into bringing in any new defenders.

“Of course it does leave a void in our team – we like to have two players per position, so we are now looking for another one,” he says. “We have pencilled in a number of youngsters from the youth which we have been trying out in the Diski Challenge, and then I think in the new year we will make that decision and promote one of the kids.

“We’ve only got two games until the January break, and we’ll be able to sign somebody then, so it gives us a bit of time to make the right decision and try a few youngsters, and not just throw a guy in there for the sake of it.”
