Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela full of praise for striker Edward Manqele

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela heaped praise on striker Edward Manqele following his performance against Jomo Cosmos on Tuesday, lauding his work ethic for the team.

The Glamour Boys were held to their fifth draw of the season in a goalless stalemate against the PSL new-comers, yet ‘Jabu’ was a constant thorn for the hosts upfront as he put in an industrious display, even finding the back of the net following a delightful touch before being ruled off-side.

And Komphela was quick to praise his new frontman after the game for his energy on both sides of the park.

“The boy has a great attitude, and the boy says yes to hard work,” the Amakhosi coach said. “It’s rare when you see a striker chasing the ball willingly and defends, and Jabu did that.

“There was one run he made chasing the ball to the corner of our big box – you don’t see that in many strikers. Now that’s a message to say: ‘Listen, I’m willing to offer myself to the gold and black shirt, are you prepared to be with me?’ And yes, we are prepared to be with him.”

Komphela was then asked his reasons for starting Reyaad Pieterse in goal, with national keeper Itumeleng Khune not selected in the matchday squad, as the coach complemented the strength of his entire goalkeeping department.

“We are privileged at Kaizer Chiefs to have three top keepers: Itumeleng Khune – the pedigree is there; Brilliant Khuzwayo – unbelievable, and Reyaad Pieterse – references in this match,” he said. “Every time either is called upon to do service for this wonderful club, they stand up and do it with great aplomb.

“If anything had happened to Reyaad [against Cosmos], you put in Brilliant, and it would not have made a difference.

“When you have three great keepers, your challenge as a coach is to manage them, which is what we are doing.”
