Issah gears up for Serbia move

AmaZulu midfielder Mohammed-Awal Issah tells KickOff.com he believes his move to Serbian SuperLiga club Red Star Belgrade will provide the best platform to reaching his dream of playing in the major leagues overseas.

The Ghanaian midfielder has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the 1991 European champions, but must first undergo a medical check when he arrives in the country.

“I have targets I set during different phases of a season. I’m hoping that after a season-and-a-half with Red Star, I will have done enough that I could look for a move to another league, especially a stronger one in Europe,” Issah says.

“I’m leaving on January 3 for my medical tests and, if they are successful, I will return to South Africa briefly before going to Ghana. After that I will go to Serbia to start competing for my place in February. My contract was faxed to me last week and I signed and returned it. Now I’m just looking to being with the club.

“What I know is that the football is Serbia is competitive, and the club, which is based in the capital, is the biggest in the country.”

Issah says it is painful to leave AmaZulu at this time of the season when they have just started to find some form.

“It’s never nice to leave people that are close to you. I will especially miss Pere Ariweriyai, whom I stayed with,” he says. “After 18 months in Durban I had settled very well and made many friends.”

When he arrives in Serbia, Issah will have African company in the form of DR Congo striker Ibrahim Some, who also plays for Red Star.
