Cavin Johnson to help Siyabonga Zulu after red card

Posted: 9 September 2015 Time: 15:24

Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson says he will handle Siyabonga Zulu’s sending off on his Bafana Bafana debut positively and make sure the left-back continues delivering exceptional performances at the club.

Zulu was shown his marching orders for a professional foul on his national team debut in the 3-1 2017 Afcon qualifier defeat to Mauritania.

The 22 year-old returned to his club today after the end of the international week yesterday.

“It is important that I give the boy praise yet again for his sterling performance in the national Under-23 squad which earned him that call-up to the senior team,” Johnson tells KickOff.com. “Then it is for me to make him understand that being sent-off happens in football.

“I think he got that red card because he was fighting for the team and not for being reckless, so it is helps us that we at least already know the consequences that led to the sending off.

“So I will have a chat with him just to make sure that his confidence remains up because this situation is more to do with the mental state of the player than anything else. And for us as coaches we are paid to make sure that we work on the mental state of the players.”

Johnson adds: “Knowing Siya, I believe he is strong enough to put this episode behind him despite all the noise that has been made about that defeat. I know that he is going to be fine.

“He now needs to concentrate on his job here at the club and I know that it is my duty to get him out of that place of being red-carded at the weekend while playing for Bafana into fulfilling his duties confidently here at the club.”

Zulu joined Dikwena at the beginning of the season from Chippa United and has featured in two of the three games that his club has played to date.
