Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba has indicated he continues to believe in youth by calling up Phumlani Ntshangase and Siyabonga Zulu for the 2017 AFCON Group M qualifier against Mauritania.
Ntshangase and Zulu have been afforded the chance of earning their places in the senior team after coming through the national Under-23 ranks in recent months.
Mashaba says if the national Under-23 squad wasn’t in camp this week preparing for two friendly games against Tunisia on September 4 and 7 then he would have brought in a lot more players from Owen da Gama’s team which has Kwanda Mngonyama, Keagan Dolly, Abbubaker Mobara and Siphelele Ntshangase.
“Most unfortunately this is a week in which both the national Under-23 and the senior team are playing. We would have had another two or three players from the national Under-23 squad but we said let us give them a chance to prepare for their upcoming game,” says Mashaba.
The national Under-23 squad is using the two friendly matches against Tunisia as part of preparations for the CAF Under-23 Championships in Senegal, which will double up as the final qualifiers for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Bafana take on Mauritania in Nouakchott on Saturday.
