Former Ajax Cape Town midfielder Norman Mapeza has led his Zimbabwe club Monomotapa to a first-ever title and set up the possibility of a mouth-watering meeting against his former employers.

Mapeza, who played in Turkey before joining Ajax, saw his side win the Zimbabwe Premier League on Saturday after their closest rivals, and defending champions, Dynamos suffered a surprise defeat at Masvingo.

Monomotapa’s 0-0 draw at Chapungu was enough to secure them the title with one round of matches to play as they moved into an unassailable four point lead.

Monomotapa will play in next year’s CAF Champions League where they have drawn to play Miembeni of Zanzibar in the first round. The winner of this tie then meets Ajax in the second round.

“It has been a hard year for us, having to work against all odds to keep our position at the top. I am happy and now I am preparing for the African safari. The African Champions league needs thorough preparations and that is what I am doing,” Mapeza said.
