SuperSport United captain Thuso Phala says he received a wake-up call after being left out of the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mauritania.
The pacey winger was part of the group that played to a goalless draw at home to Gambia in the first qualifier.
However, Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba overlooked Phala for the upcoming trip to Nouakchott on September 5.
"Expectations are there but if you're not called up then it's a wake-up call to work more harder from what I have been doing," says the former Platinum Stars man.
"Since the last camp I was there and not being there now and obviously there's a bit of dissappointment.
"But I mean there's so many players to chose from. The players who have been chosen have been doing well for these past weeks."
Despite his disappointment, Phala was pleased to see in-form Orlando Pirates midfielder Mpho Makola get a call-up.
"I'm happy to see Makola there being given the opportunity. I mean he did well and it shows that if a player does well then he's given a chance so I'm happy for the guys who have been chosen to represent the country."
