Jomo Sono sings Sherwin Naicker’s praises

Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono says he doesn’t scout keepers, he only scores against them, but he is delighted with what Sherwyn Naicker has brought to the club.

Naicker kept his third consecutive clean-sheet in last night’s draw at SuperSport United, including a brilliant last-minute save to deny Jeremy Brockie.

He started his career at SuperSport, and ‘Bra J’ says he is happy the goalkeeper made his way to Cosmos.

“I told him that they [SuperSport] kicked him out and he must go and prove them wrong,” Sono says.

“I am not good at scouting goalkeepers, I was only good at scoring against them.

“You know how I got the boy? We met when I was going to training. He stopped me and said ‘Bra J, I want to come and train with your team’. I looked at him and said ‘Yerr, an Indian goalkeeper ... the last Indian goalkeeper was Deshi Baktawer’.

“He said ‘give me chance’ and I said he must come. When we got to training to my players mshayeni (beat him with shots at goals). He saved everything!”

Sono adds: “He has done well because people were saying he is short. We are happy for him. The boy is professional and trains hard. Avril Phali is helping him a lot because he has experience.”

Sono says he was happy with the points away at SuperSport.

"The team is gelling. To come here and get a point is not easy, especially with these international players against an NFD side.

“To be honest, maybe if we had another 10 minutes we could have scored a goal because they started to push everybody up and opened up at the back. That's why we brought in Nkanyiso, because he has pace. He nearly scored.”
