New Golden Arrows coach Serame Letsoaka says he was interested in signing Marc van Heerden until he heard of AmaZulu's asking price for the Bafana Bafana defender.
Van Heerden has been a consistent force in recent seasons for Usuthu but was unable to help the team avoid relegation in 2014/15.
AmaZulu's demotion prompted widespread speculation over Van Heerden's future although the club appear determined to retain his services.
The Durban-based outfit also recently decided against recruiting fellow fullback Rueben Thebakang.
"Yes, we had a chat as I've known him [Van Heerden] way back when he was still playing for SA Under-17," says Letsoaka, who coached the national U-20 team.
"I have spoken to him regarding his future. However, he told me AmaZulu want R4 million.
"I then told him he was too expensive for a defender and we left it at that."
Arrows often deployed Matome Mathiane as a make-shift left-back during their run to National First Division honours under Shaun Bartlett last term.
