The 31-year-old winger, who has lost his place in the Bafana Bafana squad, is being sought by Bielefeld to help their bid against relegation from Germany's Bundesliga.
Buckley scored 15 goals for Bielefeld in the 2004/2005 season, which earned him a lucrative move to former European champions Borussia Dortmund.
But three seasons with Dortmund have failed to see Buckley come even close to re-creating that goalscoring form with just one goal for the club, who are now seeking to offload him with six months left of his contract.
Durban-born Buckley, who has had just three substitute appearances in the Bundesliga this season, is seeking a salary package similar to his current deal, but Bielefeld are having a hard time coming up with the cash for a three-year deal.
Dortmund are also seeking a cash payout for Buckley while still under contract.
“There are still some details to sort out,” was all the Bielefeld sports director Detlev Dammeier offered in response to questions over the deal.
A change in environment is desperately needed by the left winger, who was dropped by Joel Santana after the four World Cup qualifiers in June.
Buckley has scored 10 times in 72 appearances for South Africa since his debut over a decade ago.
