The Department of Trade and Industry, in partnership with the University of KZN, is hosting a SADC regional conference on Intellectual Property (IP) Enforcement which has a strong 2010 angle.
The theme of the three day event in Durban is “Towards Integrated Regional IP enforcement: 2010 and beyond”.
Fifa representatives, senior government officials, academics, lawyers, law enforcement, and IP experts from different intellectual property organisations are attending the event.
The issue is currently a hot potato because the trade and industry department has designated the World Cup as a protected event in terms of the Merchandise Marks Act.
This was done to prevent ambush marketers and trademark infringers from attempting to capitalise on the tournament.
