Ajax leave it late against Wits

A last minute goal saw Ajax Cape Town beating Bidvest Wits 2-1 in an Absa Premiership game played at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

Ajax were on the offensive from the outset and in as early as the third minute they threatened the Wits goal when a speculative 25-yard drive from Dipsy Selolwane flew just yards wide of goal.

And after eight minutes the home side were in front, thanks to a Clayton Daniels goal.

The young defender had only to bundle the ball over the line from six yards out after Wits keeper Energy Murambadoro had made a real hash of Sameehg Doutie’s corner.

Marawaan Bamtam tried to implement an immediate response for the Clever Boys, but his 20-yard shot went straight at Ajax keeper Sean Roberts.

In general Ajax were the more industrious side as the half progressed, however, there were only a couple of half-chances which preceded Wits equalising goal after 37 minutes.

Marawaan Bantam was the man to level the game, scoring with a dipping free kick which appeared to have taken a slight deflection.

The Johannesburg side ended the half strongly and just before the break Bantam was desperately unlucky not to score again when his shot from a tight angle on the right hand side of the box crashed into the crossbar with Roberts well beaten.

Ajax should have been back in front a minute after the restart, but with the goal at his mercy, Selolwane succeeded only in steering the ball into Murambadoro’s hands.

After that chance the quality of play was in general poor as both sides gave the ball away carelessly with a result that the game became scrappy and disjointed.

It took until the 78th minute for the next chance to present itself and it came via another Murambadoro blunder – after failing to adequately deal with a cross, the ball fell kindly to Khenyeza, but his goal-bound shot was deflected over the bar for a corner.

Brazilan Fabricio Da Silva nearly won it for the Students in the 83rd minute with a cracking drive, but unfortunately for the midfielder the ball just kept on rising and no save was required by Roberts.

Then with the game deep in injury time, Ajax were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position right on the edge of the area.

Brett Evans took the kick and the ball looped up off the defensive wall and was headed into the back of the net by Daniels, sealing the win with seconds to go.
