AmaZulu climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time since August with a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City in Durban on Wednesday night.
Goodman Dlamini and Bongi Ntuli marked their return from suspension with goals for Usuthu, who inched a point above Moroka Swallows and Free State Stars.
The Dube Birds, who now prop up the standings, lost 1-0 at Chippa United in a simultaneous fixture, while Stars were not in action.
Essau Kanyenda took the first threatening shot for City, but Energy Murambadoro parried the ball away.
G. Dlamini then opened the scoring on the half-hour mark. Two minutes later Sfiso Hlanti also tried his luck but his shot went wide.
Polokwane also came close to scoring as Rendani Ndou fired in a shot, but Murambadoro made a good save.
In the 40th minute G. Dlamini tried to search for a brace, but Marumo was well positioned to get his hands on the ball.
In the second half it was Ntuli who made the first attempt, but his shot missed the target just a minute after the kick-off.
AmaZulu’s youngster Tapelo Nyongo took a strike to double the score but again went wide in the 53rd minute.
In the 56th Jabu Maluleke took a set piece, but Mfundo Nsele managed to make a clearance.
Tapelo Nyongo continued to be troublesome for City’s defence, but Marumo managed to make a save once again.
In the 70th minute former Golden Arrows striker Ntuli’s header went wide as he tried to get a goal.
Thirteen minutes later he finally reaped the fruits for his hard work when he found the back of the net for Usuthu with a right-foot finish which saw them seal a 2-0 win.
