Maritzburg United goalkeeper Virgil Vries says he is growing into his new role as club captain.

Vries has taken over the armband from injured midfielder Ashley Hartog, who has missed his side's previous six games.

“I try to lead the team by being as positive as I can,” Vries told United's website. “Not only in words, but also in my actions, and I think I’m headed in the right direction because the players have responded well to me so far.

“I’m happy to captain the team. It’s an honour and a privilege to be the captain of a professional team. I have the support of the management, and I’m learning all the time from the young players and from the experienced players, how to implement man-management. I’m taking things day by day, and I feel I’m growing all the time.”
